  Ch. 1

Their whole friendship began with a simple coincidence.

Hayden was never good at making friends. All the kids at his old school bullied him and called him an emo freak, because he was different. What made his parents think that Ohio would be any different? Hayden hadn't even started school yet but he knew that it would just be the same.

Since Hayden didn't have any friends, he wandered around town until he found a place where he could be alone, listen to music and write lyrics. He wanted to form his own band one day.

He sat back against the tree and watched the cars go by. After a few moments of being there, a group of girls walked by on the other side of the street. Hayden didn't think anything of it. Girls didn't usually like him and these looked to be the type that would reject him in a heartbeat. He didn't want to get his hopes up too much.

He watched them walk by and prayed they wouldn't see him sitting there watching them, even though he was hidden by the shadows of the trees around him.

He carefully looked at each one and they all seemed to look and be the same. Their hair was styled the same way, they all wore similar clothing and they seemed to have upbeat, bubbly personalities. They were the types of girls who got whatever they asked for and believed nothing bad could happen to them.

Except one of them. There was something about her that made her different. Her black hair was wavy instead of straight like all the other girls and she had bangs that swooped across her forehead. Instead of pastel colored, flowy blouses and short tight skirts like the other girls, she wore a black band t-shirt and skinny jeans.

Aside from her beauty, her aura of difference is what made Hayden even more attracted to her. Her smile made him smile and there was happiness radiating off her that made him happy, too. He didn't know who she was but he knew he had to see her again.

Hayden went to the same spot by the tree every day so he could see the girl again. He liked the feeling she gave him. She made him happy without even knowing it.

There were days she was with her friends and there were days where she was alone. Hayden wanted to talk to her but he was too shy. He was afraid that she would reject him just like every other girl before her did.

He was just happy to be filled with her happiness. He thought that she must be the happiest girl in the world to be able to make others happy with just one flash of that perfect smile.

But she wasn't. Lily always looked like she was happy but she never really was. All her friends hated her music and sometimes laughed at her because of it. Her music was her everything. She knew that they didn't purposefully intend to hurt her but they did.

As Lily walked home that day, she got this weird feeling that someone was watching her. It had been happening quite a lot recently. She always felt like there was someone watching her but when she looked around, no one was there.

Lily was the girl who had friends but never wanted to hang around with them. Hayden was the guy who never had real friends and always hated being lonely while he knew that everyone else was out having fun. What would happen if their two worlds were to collide unexpectedly?
